Aiding AIDS
Aiding AIDS
Broken souls amidst a competitive
society, perhaps it wasn’t even their fault! AIDS a diseases once feared and
dreaded amongst the literate lot of our fast growing world still creates an awakening.
Technologies may have changed, life styles may have improved but how many of us
have really taken time out to think of, maybe, a special case AIDS patient we
have known ?
With just the basic knowledge
that it is an Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and mostly not contagious
unless you are in close touch with blood fluids of the infected person , I really
did not give a thought to the thousands who are suffering of it and how , due to the lack of understanding from
people that surround them, their world closes down to emptiness. Reading
inspiring quotes and life stories on the
internet, I recollect a case where a
woman stands by her husband’s death bed, a man dying at a very young age of 32
years only, later to be told that he was dying of AIDS. The lady had to face yet
another dying truth that she probably
could be suffering of the same. A mother of 2 kids, she never accused her husband of
unfaithfulness rather accepted him as the father of her 2 daughters. She knew
that he was the reason for transmission
of the disease to her but the simple act of acceptance without accusing anyone had lead to a happy
life with her family. Its difficult for an AIDS patient to cope up with the
disease itself, the weakness felt can be imagined, it’s a this point of time that I remember the quotes of late
Princess Diana which says , “HIV does not make people dangerous to know., so
you shake their hands and give them a hug: Heaves knows they need it”. Yes they
need our love, our care and our understanding. The internet floods with
beautiful stories how AIDS patients were able to carry on with their lives with
the support and help of their near and dear ones. A story tells us about a lady who wear the Red ribbon for all
the near and dear ones that she has lost due to this disease. A remembrance of
the beautiful individuals they were more than a reminder of the disease.
A believer of social service and
always on a look out for NGO who need help, the truth remains in me, I FEAR
THEM. I am afraid that just walking into a room where an AIDS patient lies I
would perhaps contract it, an un rational fear that I am sure many of us carry. I recollect an
incident where I was telling a friend that we should visit these special cases,
the answer received is, why trouble yourself with dangerous things!Thoughts
raced through my mind that very moment that perhaps she was right, I was putting myselfinto
dangerous circumstances and perhaps had a lot to lose then gain. That day I let
go of the thought to visit any NGO dealing with this disease, I concentrated on
cancer instead…
Today, when I was given this
chance to express myself, I admit, I have been wrong. I have been born for a
purpose, a purpose to help the unfortunate, a purpose to create an awareness
and for a purpose to do just the simple things in life, perhaps as simple as share a smile with those
who can’t smile. Am sure if we overcame our fears and stopped discrimination we
could be good shepherds mending broken
souls. Reaching out to those who need our love and our smiles and telling them
that the world is indeed much more broken then this disease, would indeed be a
great awareness program in itself.
They say that positive thoughts
and affirmations heal lives, our good deeds would be the positive affirmation
to the AIDS patients, they would understand that they are not alone and that
things are not as really bad as it is. Lets make a promise to ourselves today,
first , to overcome fear that AIDS is not as bad as it may seem and second help to reach out in our own way, paying the
much needed visits to these patients, contributing our finances to the good
work of the various NGO around the world or just the simple act of volunteering
will help in a big way to open up doors to this cause. Let’s be part of the red
ribbon movement cause it’s time to give our hearts and roses to them ……………
